Cat Culture

OK, I'm taking strain here. I'm a dog person and my house has been invaded by two THINGS.
I have put scratching posts, complete with climbing ropes and platforms, upstairs and down. Their room is equipped with multi-level hiding places, toys and loving kids. They have a constant supply of both wet and dry food.
And still, they climb curtains, open doors, tip bins, climb on counters, shred bread, eat plants...
Basically, CATS RULE!
I am reading Garfield comics with new eyes these days.
Upon the advice of my vet, I invested in some spray bottles which are strategically (not aesthetically!) placed around the house. Upon their multitudinous infringements, the kittens get soaked, which, while it deters them for the moment, has no lasting effect.
Help! All you cat lovers and owners out there - please give advice - how do I train these kittens without wanting to report myself to the RSPCA (even supposing there were one out here).
On the plus side, the kids drag the kittens around, dress them up, paint them, cuddle them and love them...I may not sell them just yet...
