Frying Pan versus Fire

I have made friends with a Lebanese woman recently, and today we were discussing our summer plans. She is heading home to Beirut to see her family, and upon learning that I'm going back to Johannesburg, she was very concerned. She wanted to know how I could do it, wasn't I scared to be going back to such a dangerous place?
If one of the natives of a world hotspot considers SA too dangerous to visit, what does that say? Is it an indictment of South Africa today or of the world's media?

We do business with a bank based in Beirut and they have opened up some branches in Iraq and one of the Iraqi employees needed to go to Beirut for training.
Before he arrived he emailed to ask: "Is it safe to come to Beirut?".
The lebanese answer, without the expletives, to this was that if you live in Iraq, you don't have the right to ask questions like that.
