A Growing Family

Yesterday we increased our family headcount by 1. Stephanie finally got her long awaited hamster - not without some hard work from me! No hamsters could be found in AD and I sat with a long list of petshops names and numbers and phoned them every few days to find out if they had received any baby hamsters. On Thursday, my perseverance eventually paid off - a little pet shop in Dubai had 3 Syrian youngsters available.
So full of excitement and anticipation (as well as warnings - they may not be suitable, they may be too wild, you may not like them....) we headed off to Dubai for the Great Hamster Collection.
The hamsters were still there and the owner took them out of the cage and put them in an empty kitty litter box so we could have a good look at them and handle them before buying. Which was a good thing, as the fawn one that Steph initially favoured bit first Steph and then Alex. Alex saw Steph getting bitten but was clearly convinced that it wouldn't bite HIM with his superior animal handling skills. So much for his superior animal handling skills. And he made far more fuss than Steph did....
A little grey and white one responded well to be handled, allowing itself to be caught and even stroked as it sat quietly in our hands. So she has joined our family. The petshop guy swears she's a girl - I hope he's right as Steph did not want a boy AT ALL.
We then managed to escape the petshop without any further pets in the form of a siamese kitten (Alex and David) or snake (Alex) or a pair of breeding finches (Darrell and Alex).
I was very proud of myself. And Steph went to sleep with a smile on her face and a very noisy hamster spinning on it's wheel.
