Kidzania

Yesterday Rachel and I took our 6 kids (yes, full car) through to Dubai to visit Kidzania, in the Dubai Mall. It was really fantastic, especially for the older kids.
It is an entire indoor town, complete with Banks, newspaper offices, shops, medical facilities, grand prix circuit, construction sites, fire stations, police station, theatre etc etc etc. When we entered, the kids were each given a cheque for 50kidzos, which they had to cash at the bank and could then spend on whatever they liked (except the face painting, we had to pay dhs for that). They could also earn kidzos by working in the various business. If they went to university and got a degree, they would earn more, if they got a masters, they would earn more again. They could have their resume made which analysed what kind of person they were (Alex was managerial, David was logical, Steph didn't get hers done) and then suggested appropriate employment for them. The four boys went off in a group and we hardly saw them, except when they got hungry for lunch (again, we had to pay for that with real dhs). The girls wanted us to stay with them - which we did for the entire day (very hard as there were far too few seats for trapped parents). They lived a fairly hand to mouth existance - worked then raced cars, then worked and raced cars - they spent it as they earned it. They were till packers, bricklayers, beauty therapists, nurses in the baby ward and fire fighters. They had to get their drivers licences to be allowed to drive little cars to the adnoc petrol station, which involved crashing a few times on a driving simulator. I'm very glad those licences are not valid off road!

The boys did a lot more stuff, including a flight simulator and rock climbing and abseiling down - not quite sure exactly how they filled their day as we just glimpsd them occasionally as they tore by intent on some task or other.

It was really well done (for those of you who are familiar with Monte Casino, it resembled the village there) - and although quite pricey, well worth a visit. Hopefully next year, if we take the kids again, the girls will be old enough to allow us to leave them and go an entertain ourselves for the day in the huge bookshop in the Dubai Mall.
