Dreamland

Our weekend (long weekend, 2 whole days) was spent at Dreamland Aquatic Park. I had been dreading it - I am not a fan of theme parks and trying to keep track of 4 different people while doing continuous runs to the toilets and food stalls and first aid centres - but this turned out to be an unexpectedly enjoyable time.

It was a 2.5 hour drive from Abu Dhabi, which was a bit tedious, mainly because much of that time was spent in traffic, not in actually moving vast distances.

The park is large, and laid out in such a way that although there must have been a fair number of people there, it didn't seem crowded at any stage - no long queues for rides. There was a wide variety of slides and rides to suit all ages and temperaments, as well as a little zoo to look at and a few restuarants and shops. You were not allowed to take any food in with you, so the shops did rather a brisk trade.

We stayed overnight at the camp in little cabins - well, zozo huts with inflatable mattresses and sleeping bags - which was very pleasant but rather primitive. We were permitted to swim until 10pm, although the water rides themselves were out of bounds as the life guards had gone for the day at 5.30, so the kids spent the entire evening dipping in and out of the pools, playing on the tubes.

The park provided all equipment and food for braaing, in abundance. Darrell took charge of the braaing and tried his best to get all the meat supplied finished, but we ended up tossing a large amount of it, as well as salads and breads. Once supper was over, there was a belly dancer who came and entertained us. She got the men to make fools of themselves trying to gyrate with her, and overwhelmed Alex by trying to get him up and dancing - with no success, he was overcome with shyness.

In the morning breakfast was provided in the restuarant, and it was truly awful, the worst part of the whole weekend.

We were allowed to start the rides before the park actually opened, and we spent the entire morning flying from one water ride to the next.

Sadly, we had to leave at lunch time as Darrell had to be at work in Dubai in the afternoon (yes, even though it was his long weekend), but we are keen to go back there sometime and have all the fun again. Anyone keen to join us?
