Off to the Heritage Village, for the second time. This time more successful - it was open! We started with a wander through the museum, which would have been even more interesting had any of the many exhibits had explanatory signs, or had the pamphlets been printed in English as well as Arabic. Then we took a wander around a genuine fake excavation (genuine fakes are a speciality of the UAE).
Then saw how a huge bull was used to draw water from a well using a pulley system and a huge leather bag.
We took in some glass blowing, where the glass blower invited Jordynne to sit next to him, and have a turn. She took on the challenge and made the start of an amazing lamp. Then we saw the pottery maker, a chap selling junk and spices and home made soaps, someone who decorated furniture with mother of pearl, and a man making silk cloth. Lucky Jordynne got invited to have a turn operating the loom. Apparently it is very difficult to do, heavy to push the peddles and hard to coordinate all the pulling and pushing required. There was also a leather maker and a chap making brass products. And a little shop selling all the of the produce - lovely stuff, some of it, and specially priced for tourists….
There was also a little souk section were we wandered around and bought some momentoes. We found our way into a robe maker, and he showed us the robes he was making for the royal family, using real gold thread which is silk coated in gold. Jordynne was fascinated and he cut off a length of the thread for her to keep.
We said hello to a very furry camel and had a cool drink before setting off to start the afternoon chaos of pickups and ballet.
