Everyone knows my feelings about shopping. Generally I would rather go for a root canal than shop for clothes or shoes. By quite a long margin. However, living in this patch of sand, shopping is one of the main pastimes for expat wives, one aspect of living here with which I've struggled to adapt.
Yesterday I had to take my car into the city to have V-Cool put on the windows - for the uninitiated, it tints the windows dark and claims to lower the internal car temperature by several degrees, which is always a desirable effect here. So while the car was busy for 2.5 hours having its make up done, I wandered into nearby Al Wahda shopping mall to do some shopping. After a while of wandering through the shops getting more and more bored and depressed by the whole experience, I stopped for a hot chocolate and a dip into the classic currently residing in my handbag. Then refreshed I hit the shops again - and discovered why I can't shop!
It's not just because I can't find stuff I like - it's because I'm too cheap to spend the money! I managed to find two items I really really liked - one was an Armani bag (but honestly - can get bags for less than a quarter of their prices so why buy it just cos I liked it more than the cheaper ones?) and the other was a Tag Heuer sports watch (ok, super gorgeous, but again honestly - who NEEDS diamonds on their watch face?).
I feel better about myself - I am a normal woman with normal shopping urges after all. Sadly, I also have a normal amount of spending money and an abnormal fear of living in the red. Now I really just need to get over that....!
