Last weekend I let David come and join me for my morning run. I have a very nice 5km circuit that I do - but before you are impressed, let me break it down. The first 2 km I run at a nice steady jog. The next 1.5km are across sand, along the water's edge, so I walk that, allowing Pearl to have a good swim and forage through the shrubs growing there. Then I run another 1 km towards home before walking the last 500 metres across springy thick grass and allowing Pearl to socialise with the other dogs invariably being walked there. So, definitely not too arduous but we both enjoy it.
So, David set off with me. As we started running I told him very kindly, because I am a kind person, that when he gets tired he must just let me know and we'll walk a bit until he's recovered then continue running. After all, he's only 9. But he was fine until we reached the point where we drop down to the waterside. I don't want to stop running, he declared, and kept running. So I had to too. And running through sand is NOT my favourite thing to do. Pearl looked a bit put out - no pausing for a swim!
So we ran until we'd done 4.5km and as we reached the grass stretch I just about fell down in exhaustion. Time to walk, I declared. No, said David, I want to keep running. But, he said kindly, because he is a kind person, you walk and I'll run home by myself from here. So he did. And I did. Because after all, I'm over 40.
Today I went out without him.
