Tale of 2 visitors Day 19

Busy busy busy! Up at the crack of dawn, loading kayaks onto Darrell’s car. We really need to get a trailer for them, it is hard work putting 3 of them onto the Landrover. Then off to our own private little beach, hidden away behind the road works. You would only know about this spot if you knew it was there before the road works started, and were prepared to drive through a construction site… We did share the area with some clam pickers, out gathering their weekend feast, but other than that, it was all our own. We spent the morning having beach fun, either kayaking, fishing or just digging in the sand. Sadly, we had to leave before everyone had had enough, as we were meeting a crowd for a desert picnic and dune bash. So we shot home, washed off the kayaks, packed braai and desert equipment, and headed for a spot just outside Dubai where we were meeting up.

There were about a dozen cars and we formed a long snake heading over the dunes into the yellow sands (as opposed to our organised Desert Safari, which was over red sand). We set up camp in a good flat area, then those that wanted to (mainly the men and the kids!) set off for some dune bashing. Stephanie, Jeannette and I stayed behind in the camp and chatted or played (depending on our ages) with the other scaredy cats. The 4WDs started to return, and amongst them was not our not-so-trusty landrover, giving me serious worries that Darrell had got separated from the rest of the group and then stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, I worried for nothing, the cars had split into a couple of groups and Darrell’s group was the one that went on cavorting on dunes long after the others returned. Apparently, they were just having too much fun to come back! And much to Darrell’s relief, his Landrover performed well. We then braaied and enjoyed vors rolls as the sun went down. The kids lit a bonfire and I handed out light wands. And then it was time to pack up some thoroughly tired and sandy kids and head for our beds.
