Life and death on the streets of Doha

On Sunday night while the boys were playing rugby at the Rugby Club (note the capital letters, it is an important place) Stephanie was entertaining herself playing with a street kitten, probably 4 or 5 months old.  It was very cute and when we left, she said good-bye and it went off to do other kitten type things.  Stephanie didn't even bother asking if she could bring it home - if we kept every stray kitten that we came across, we'd have to buy a mansion along the lines of the one in the final scene of 101 Dalmations.  Imagine that filled with cats instead of dogs.  Shudder.Today when we arrived at swimming (which is just next door to the Rugby Club), the kitten was sitting outside the gate, and Stephanie was very pleased to see it.  Said hello, introduced the boys, and we went in to swimming lessons.
An hour later, we came out of the gate - to see the kitten still there.  Sadly, not in the same state it was in when we left.  It was lying at the side of the road by the parked cars, blood still oozing from its mouth and a popped eyeball evident.  But dead.  Nothing to be done.  The kids felt sad but accepted that this is what happens to street cats.
But I really wished we'd taken it home on Sunday.....

Oh, and by the way, if you're wondering why the Rugby Club gets capital letters and is declared an important place - it's because it's one of the few places that one can buy alcohol in Doha.  It's amazing how much happier I am to sit and watch rugby when I've got a glass of wine in my hand.....!
